The Boom Brake
Gyibing is always under your control!
Gyibing is always under your control!

Gyibing is a delicate and dangerous manoeuvre for even the most experienced sailor.
To eliminate the dangers inherent when gyibing, the WALDER® boom brake controls the horizontal and vertical movement of your boom – allowing it to sweep gunwale to gunwale with complete safety.
The boom is not stopped dead in its tracks but, rather, travels from gunwale to gunwale in a gentle controlled sweep.
The braking effect is achieved by the frictional force produced as the line slides and tightens around the drum of the WALDER® boombrake:
- No more risks during gybings for your crew
- No more risks cause unintentional gybbings
- No more broken battens
- No more broken boom
- No more risks on your mast

The braking effect is achieved by the frictional force produced as the line slides and tightens around the drum of the WALDER® boombrake.

With the WALDER® boombrake rigged, all that’s needed when sailing down-wind is to apply tension to the line, without leaving the safety of your cockpit. You’re really not need to climb on the deck.
WALDER’s new range of boom-brakes fits all sailboats, mainsails up to 110m², with many possible adjustments, without leaving the cockpit!

A good installation for maximum efficiency:

The WALDER® boombrake is a sailboat safety device that’s a snap to install; however, proper placement is essential to achieve the WALDER® boom brake’s full effect and benefit.
Remove any existing boomvang tackle from under the boom. (In the case of a rigid boomvang, rig your WALDER boombrake aft of that rigid vang.)
Rig your WALDER boombrake under the boom using a shackle, positioned approximately one-third of the way aft of the mast
Secure one end of pre-stretched line to a port or starboard external chainplate, pad-eye, or at the toe rail.
Thread the line through the guide arms and around the grooves of the drum, 2 or 3 turns; a third turn is not always necessary.
On the other side of your boat lead the line through a block fixed at the external chainplate, pad-eye, or at the toe rail, at the same level as on the first side.
Run the line back to the cockpit and secure it to a winch or a tackle.
We recommend sailing first on a fair day after you have installed your WALDER boom brake to verify the correct installation of the device and to familiarize yourself with properly adjusting tension on the line.
With use you will quickly find just the right line tension, so that the WALDER boom brake produces smooth and safe gyibes.
